Happy St. Patrick's Day

It's that day again! St. Patrick's Day

Although many will be too inebriated to actually do so, it is the day to celebrate and remember St. Patrick. Here's a bit of history about the man and the holiday.
  • In Chicago, they color the river green each year.
  • In New York City, we hold the largest parade in the world.
  • In many places, beverages, especially beer, is dyed green.
  • Corned beef and cabbage is the food to order.
  • Green articles of clothing are worn.
  • Everyone is Irish.
Also, it's the founding day of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority.

Snapple "Real Fact" 131

"Penguins have an organ above their eyes that converts seawater to fresh water."

Some more information on this gland:
  • It's called the supraorbital gland

  • Other seafaring animals have it. Such as, stingrays, alligators, marine birds, etc..

  • Sharks have one near their rectum

  • The salt gland usually releases the extra salt as a concentrated salt solution

  • When their beak is full of salt, a penguin will bang its beak against a rocks to release the built-up salt

  • It's believed that the human sweat gland and tear ducts are similar evolutionary devices

Reaction in a situation

When something happens...
When something goes down...
When you're caught off-guard...
When your safety is on the line...
When the shyt hits the fan...

How do you react? Not how you think you'll react, but how do you really react?

Do you tense up? Do you brace yourself for whatever is coming? Do you stay cool and collected? Do you flinch? Do you scream? Do you grab onto whoever is closest to you? Do you run? Do you protect your loved ones?

Look at this guy's reaction:

That's the guy I want on my team when the aliens attack.

Vegetarian

Yes, I'm going "veg". For at least a week.

For TBL2, I'm giving up meat to see if it affects my weight-loss. I spent the weekend "transitioning" over. Although I'm still eating milk and cheese, here's my list of foods to avoid:
  • beef
  • lamb
  • goat/mutton
  • pork
  • turkey
  • chicken
  • fish (I might have some if my hunger gets bad)
Yesterday, I slipped up and ate half of an organic pineapple-teriyaki meatball at Costco. It was a free sample, and I didn't even think about it. So I wrote "NO MEAT" with a pen on each hand to remind myself.

Today, I didn't have any, but I did feel a little yearning. In fact, right now, I don't really feel "hungry". I ate so I know I'm not hungry. I just want meat. I can SO devour a nice steak right now.

I'm sure tomorrow I'll be an animal. But I'm going to do this for a week. It's just a week. I can do this. I just have to tell myself that. One week.

Comic Book Technology

In the Marvel Comics future storyline, "Punisher 2099", one of the features of the Punisher's suit is "face-scramble" technology.

In this future world, security cameras are everywhere. Always watching. So to hide his identity, the Punisher's "face-scramble" technology digitally adds a skull image to cover his face on the recording.

When I first saw it, I thought that would be great with the concerns of "Big Brother" and the decreases in an individual's right to privacy. And it's only gotten worse since then.

Well, today German inventors have developed a similar technology using IR transmitters, which "blind" the camera.

Cool, very cool.
